Tomorrow is our regional qualifier. We have worked super hard this year learning, growing and sharing. We don’t know what tomorrow will hold for us, but we plan on making it fun!
We may be an experienced team, but nothing can substitute hard work. The best part about working hard is that no matter how things end up for you at the end of the day….you’re a winner because you have stretched yourself, learned and persevered. Like other teams, we have had our share of frustrations trying to get our robot to perform consistently and we have spent a lot of time researching, experimenting, and practicing. In fact we will be working right until we leave tonight.
We wish everyone well as they too prepare for their regional competitions. Enjoy, have fun, and be gracious.

P.S. Check out this list to find a tournament near you to go out and cheer at!

It was a busy weekend for the W.A.F.F.L.E.S.!
Saturday we had fun at our local practice tournament. There were 6 teams there, plus one Jr. FLL team. It was good to practice our research presentation, technical interview and field runs. We still have a lot of work to do this week before our regional event, but the feedback we received will help us focus our efforts. It was also interesting to be interviewed on the the radio and see ourselves on the news that night! Thanks again to 2809 K-botics, the Queen’s FIRST club, Queen’s, and all the volunteers that helped out with the event.
On Sunday, some of us headed to the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto for their Robots Rule weekend. Although we were tired, it was great to have a chance to try out our robot on different field mats and with different lighting conditions. We really enjoyed meeting up with some of the FLL, FRC, and VEX teams we have come to know and to have the chance to talk to different people about FIRST.
For the rest of the week we are going to continue to prepare for the Toronto Regional. We really need to improve our consistency and see if we can’t get that line following routine working! Only 6 days to go…..

For a few weeks now different members of our team have been dealing with the flu. Last week we ended up canceling both of our regular team meetings! It’s taking a bit of a toll on our progress, but hopefully we’ll somehow be able to reach our goals. The Mini W.A.F.F.L.E.S. have also been hit hard by the flu
“Honey”
P.S. Hurry up and get well “Syrup”….I miss you and it isn’t have as much fun being a “sticky twin” without you.

Sorry we haven’t been blogging a lot lately. We’re all going to try to do a better job of making the time to keep everyone up to date on our adventures.
The W.A.F.F.L.E.S. been really, really busy lately, we have been working hard on; programing, building, duplicating, sorting LEGO* and last but not least with our W.A.F.F.L.E.S. dinner party! We had a little celebration on September 23 (2009) ……just because. You could never even imagine how much fun we had that night! We had some burgers for dinner and guess what we got to make for a ultimate desert? Home made waffles of course! We had all the toppings you could think of! We had: blueberry’s, raspberry’s, strawberry’s, yogurt, cinnamon, browns Sugar, honey, maple syrup, caramel, ice cream and whip cream. It was awesome!!!!

Our team is still getting together over the summer once a week for a couple of hours. We are using the time to talk about our goals, things we’d like to do (or not do), share ideas, experiment with some building and programming, and develop a robot prototype. Things have been coming along quite nicely and we are all enjoying the slow paced, low stress of the pre-challenge season.

The w.a.f.f.l.e.s. had their first meeting since the world festival.
In the meeting we talked about goals. We also covered the devil/angel brainstorming for what we would like to see in a robot .
We tried some building. We laughed and, as always, had a lot of fun .

I have to admit I was a little concerned when we headed off to Atlanta this year that our experience would pale in comparison to that of last year. This year we knew what to expect and I wondered if it would have that same sort of magic and excitement. I am pleased to say that this year was every bit as incredible as last year, but in a different way. Perhaps a bit like apples and oranges?
With the experience from last year under our belt, we all felt at home and confident. It was so nice to see familiar faces from last year. It was comforting to know where we were going and how things worked. Wednesday’s pit set up went well. We got our pit set up quickly and the kids had time to not only test our our robot (which didn’t enjoy the trip) but to meet many of the other teams. Thursday went exceptionally well for us. Our interviews and presentations all went extremely well. The kids seemed to really be in the groove! They enjoyed interacting with the judges, you could see it in their faces. Our robot’s field runs at the Georgia Dome also went well. At one point were were ranked 6th and ended the day in 8th position. Thursday evening the team had fun singing and unicycling as part of the entertainment at the Ice Cream Social. It was a great way to cap off the day. Frida
y went well for the most part too. We had several friends join us on the field to cheer and a large cheering section in the stands thanks to our family and local FRC team 2809, K-botics. The support was awesome! We did have one particularly bad run on the table that greatly effected our final ranking, but even the challenge of having to do robot repairs during the 2.5 minute run was amazing. It gave the team a chance to show how well they can work under pressure, problem solving and working as a team. I was so proud of their determination! Friday we also had a chance to chat for quite a while with Scott Evans, the field set designer. He’s such a great guy! We also fulfilled our team goal and met FIRST founder, Dean Kamen. To make the experience absolutely over the top, we also chatted with Woodie Flowers for a bit on the floor of the Georgia Dome. What an incredible man! When he heard that this was our second year in a row attending the World Festival as a Core Values Team he actually got down on his knees and bowed to the kids. As if that wasn’t enough he asked all the kids to sign his shirt and even held our robot while they did so. What an amazing sight! The rest of Friday was spent juggling all the judges that were looking to talk to us. I lost count of them, but there were at least 12 that came by. The poor kids barely had time to use the washroom! We also had a lot of fun taking pictures with the camera phones we were given for the Team Alliance Activity. Saturday morning we headed to the Ballroom at the Omni for the FLL closing ceremonies. There we were recognized not only as a Core Values team, but for a 2nd place Programming Award. Afterward we headed back to the Georgia Dome to cheer the many FRC teams we have come to know. The day wrapped up with the Finale party at the park, where a couple of the kids even got to meet FIRST president, Paul Gudonis. I’m always amazed by the festivities. The food, the games, the entertainment, and of course the fireworks.

When we arrived in Atlanta, we checked in to the Marriott Marquis(the hotel we stayed at) and we got a drive to the Georgia Dome, because last year we found we were exhausted from lugging all that stuff from the hotel to the Georgia Dome whitch 1.5 miles. So we got to the Dome and we checked in and got our pins saying our team number (24) then headed of to set up our pit dissplay. After that we toured the pits, and met extraordinarily nice teams. Wendsday was defenetley the beginning of the fantastic week yet to come!!!
